FireWire is an external device used to transfer high amounts ofdata. This device was invented by Apple and is also known as theIEEE 1394 since it is the standard to which it belongs. Thisway, we could say that FireWire is the Apple version of the IEEE1394 and the most known one as well, in such a way that usuallythose terms are used as synonymous.

Although FireWire is the most usual denomination under whichthis device is known, there also are some other names sometimesgiven to it. Among the other names by which FireWire might bereferred to there is not only the IEEE 1394 but also HighPerformance Serial Bus. This way, any of these threedenominations refer to this same device, and using any of themwould be correct.

A FireWire can not only transmit data at a speed of a minimum of400 megabits per second but also can be connected to more than60 other devices. This way, a FireWire can manage a high amountof different tasks and complete them all very fast andefficiently. Among the many different types of data it would beable to transmit, an example would be DV digital video, which isusually transmitted

from camcorders into PCS or Macs with thehelp of a FireWire, a task which would not be able to beachieved without this help.

Whenever you need to transmit data from one external peripheralto another or between audio or video devices, the FireWire wouldallow you to achieve the task quickly and without loosingquality. This way, if you need to transmit a high amount ofdigital data from one device to another you could easily achieveit by using this standard device.
